Ancient Rome began with legend that God Mars had two boys named Romulus and Remus. A wolf found these babies and a shepherd raised.
After they grew they fought over each other. Romulus kills Remus and went on to find the city of Rome.
The real story was farmers and fisher men settled around the river Tiber. the romans found a small army and began to conquer other lands.
Ancient was ruled by many kings. The Kings rule lasted over two hundred years. But the Romans were unhappy with their last King Tarquin.
They over threw him and set up a republic.
A republic is a form of government where no one person has complete control. In Roman Republic the people has some say in the government.
They elected two men called consuls to replace the King. The Government
also included a group of powerful men called Senators. Ordinary citizens served together in groups called assemblies. Women, slaves and people not from Rome could not vote.
After the republic ended Emperors ruled Rome. Some emperors were worshiped like Gods. The Senate and Assemblies existed but the Emperor was in charge.
In the third century Roman lands stretched from the cool and rainy coasts of Britain to the burning sands of Egypt .
